I would generalize and say that tinkerers are better programmers, because you tend to get a better grasp of how your tooling works.

People that create vscode extensions and customize their workflows also share that spirit.

One can express curiousity in Unity, Unreal Engine, Visual Studio, etc...

No need to kill yourself with unproductive tools.

Perhaps what also makes one a better programmer is the simple realization that curiousity is one thing, but using stupid tools is a fools errand when nowadays there is a better tool for everything than tedious text editors.

That's funny because most of the thousands of Vim users I have helped in 10+ years of support on various channels were incredibly dumb, lazy, and shallow.

"Better" is indeed all they could hope to become but they were definitely not there yet.

I've been using vim for many years but I think the real reason is a sort of peer pressure. Vim and emacs are tremendously dated.

For example the main concepts in vim, which are generally evangelized by vim users, modes and home row movement, are entirely the result of limitations of the early terminal used to create it many decades ago.

The article has no substance and is just flamebate so I think it should be removed.

I'm going to flag it.

I like and use vim, but this is like saying BMW owners are better drivers.
It’s more like saying drivers of classic cars are better drivers. Which isn’t really a surprise. There are also plenty of great drivers who don’t drive classic cars
