It is reported that this employee's contract is meant to pay him, by means of his salary, for an acquisition. That may have been a bad way to structure the acquisition, but abrogating this agreement has much more liability associated with it than, say, stiffing the janitors. Not having paid in full for the acquired company, Twitter might not have the right to use acquired assets.
Elon shoots from the hip and jeopardizes Twitter's right to use not-fully-acquired IP. If there was anything stupider than "we changed an API and, shucks, stuff broke" this would be it.
