Tell HN: OpenAI removed all my ChatGPT history without telling me

Everything is gone. In the left pane, I see no history. I had maybe 30 different chat histories which are now disappeared completely.

Crazy thing is, I still have a link to one of my chats and that works:

So I'm sure they still keep the chat histories on their servers even if it doesn't show in the history panel.

Same, I've seen a few people saying the same thing in the past couple of minutes.

Do you think it's temporary? I noticed their streaming was slower than usual as well. Can server overload cause this problem?

I really hope so. It's lost my history before but only for a minute or two and I always attributed it to my browser chugging with too many tabs open. At this point I'm just going to wait and see :/

Pretty sure its just a bug that will be resolved soon

I can also access old chats that are still open so it's likely a bug.

that's why I made my own chat with the api lol, infinite chats, fast load, past edition including prompt

I have so many chats; I always wondered why ChatGPT doesn't have export feature and whatif happens if it loses it all; here we are :(

exactly, this just happened to me!! i need the chats back, I was doing an assignment with Chat GPT and all the feedback and information are gone!! I went to go to the bathroom, came back, and all the chats gone!! wtf

I think only those with free account are affected. I have 2 accounts - 1 free & 1 paid. All my chats in the free account are gone, but I still have my chats in paid account.

I just had this issue with my paid account. I just canceled the renewal today, expiring in a few weeks, so I chalked it up to a clumsy downgrading system. Looks like not.

This happened before. It seems like chat history is a separate (micro)service with lower-than-perfect availability. It came back last time, and have no reason to believe it wouldn't this time.
