Ask HN: Best < $700 general purpose laptop with good heat management?

I.E.: Ideally, the laptop would be fast and at the same time stay somewhat cool to the touch.

I prefer mat screens and like open firmware like coreboot but that isn't a requirement.

I’ve seen M1 MacBook Air models go for around $650-750. Refurbished
I try to avoid Apple devices because of the artificial restrictions ... it almost feels like a mobile OS (which also has lots of artificial restrictions)
Like what? These are also machines you can run Linux and BSD on if you like
