Ask HN: Is the Dream Over?

As someone who aspires to, but never worked for FAANG, is the dream over?

It felt like a halo job, a good dream to work towards.

I know, there’s more to life than FAANG and it’s really not such a big deal for some to get a job there.

I wonder if such a time/place to work in tech will ever appear again, or is it over?

These are still special places, I suppose, but when the macro economy returns, will they be as desirable to work for again?

It’s a little saddening.

Are you a 17yo from Pakistan? Otherwise, if you're going to dream, you may as well dream bigger than a cubicle at Amazon.

Why would it be over? 2022 has only been a setback, it's not the end. People made similar arguments and had similar fears in 2009. The long-term trend is way up. There will always be demand for top talent.

21/22 made it very easy to get into FAANGs but that was a false reality. But now it would be a dream for many because of the competition. Working in a FAANG even for just 3 years is enough to retire back in home country because 3 yrs of that FAANG salary takes care of the whole family for generations.
I've been into software engineering for 8+ years. As any coder i aspired to a faang job. Blew a good chance in my beginnings when competition was not this crazy. Then years passed and later found myself considering how a faang life would've been. I never really managed to discipline myself into faang interview prep. But today i have tons of startup experience, know some good tech, built some products, my passion is strong, and my only reality is that i will eventually succeed with my life plans. We all chase the money, and landing a faang job is a certainty of getting it, but you could regard faang as a false objective. Instead focus on learning how to deal with your life, with your craft, be a little cunning and money has a good chance to follow. It takes time but who cares, enjoy the ride
