Wow, everyone was waiting for this to happen. Some people were speculating that they left it up as long as they did to intentionally hurt OpenAI/Microsoft. Regardless of whether that is true or not FB had to do this sooner rather than later or risk losing the ability to enforce the license in the future.

Honestly though it doesn't matter since the torrent will stay active for the foreseeable future.

I can't wait until there is a properly licensed open source / open weights GPT model so we can actually start using it commercially in ernest.

It felt a long time ... on the other hand AI related events/news are so dense, you can't say if some are coincidence or connected. bard just launched, at least for a few users in the US and the UK - but is it related? not?

They can’t lose the ability to enforce their license, they could leave it alone until the day before the copyright expires and launch a bunch of lawsuits if they wanted to.

Assuming that they can even copyright a bunch of model weights.

Patents, on the other hand, need to be protected or they can be lost.
