Poll: How long will you read new replies to your older comments?
Often HN discussions are rather fast-paced. People comment on comments within hours or even minutes. If you are following a discussion actively that's a natural thing to do.
However, sometimes I take a bit longer breaks from HN and then I see that someone replied quickly after I wrote some comment, but I did not see it until something between a day and a week later. If I just wanted to contradict the commenter and defend my earlier comment I consider it case closed. However, sometimes the commenter shows genuine interest and asked something. So it would be polite to reply. The question is just, would they still read the response?
Do you use some service or script to be notified of responses? I believe I have seen those mentioned, but myself I have never bothered to look at any. I just use "Threads" on the vanilla HN web UI.
Edit: (ah right, HN randomizes the order of the choices)
