Interesting. The article suggests a "Western" smile culture, but there is also a difference between Americans and Europeans when it comes to smiling.
It's a very interesting article, and it gives me another reason to be skeptical of AI. Not only is it doing this with images, but also with writing, and it perpetuates that. We already see languages adopting English modes of thought where they didn't have it -- while, ironically, claiming to be decolonising their minds -- and it's leading to a loss of diversity in how languages express things, which is generally an underlying representation of how cultures conceive of them. English and the cultural hegemony of Anglophone countries is basically destroying diversity, in all forms, across the world.
