Although the intent is noble, I'm skeptical that this will work in practice. The research field and the commercial space is simply too competitive. 6 months is a very long time in the AI space. It's sort of a "prisoner's dilemma" in the sense that there's too much incentive to get ahead while others have paused their development.
One way this *might* work is if all cloud providers agreed to shut down AI / LLM training operations for all users over the 6 month period. But this doesn't seem very likely.
