Certain geo-/demo-graphic configurations appear to host cyclical historic patterns, like groundhog's day in shifting period customs and arms. The matrix Rome-Armenia-Persia for example also seems to run on a cycle. It seems this phenomena is a natural byproduct of being wedged between powers.
(Not familiar with East Asian history but it would not surprise me to see similar phenomena over there as well.)
