Ask HN: Is open source subject to sanctions?

3 points by RichardoC ↗ HN
Context: I use Kubernetes's go client, which eventually relies on github.com/mailru/easyjson

This is maintained by Mail.ru which is eventually owned by Gazprom Media which is subject to EU and USA sanctions.

Can that library continue to be used commercially given it's under MIT license or is it subject to sanctions?

Obligatory, I am not a lawyer and very confused.

Not a direct answer to your question, but the solution would be to fork it, I guess? If that did become an issue

You can use whatever you want, sanctions don’t affect that. What you can’t do is paying money to sanctioned entities.
