OS shell with rich interactive output

Hey HN

I'm surprised we still don't have OS shells which are closer to what the Symbolics Lisp Machine had in the 80s.

Every once in a while, I look around to see if there are any projects working on something like this for modern OSes.

So though I'd ask here... Does anyone know of any current projects like this?

Any pointers to a description, video, emulation, etc, of what the Symbolics Lisp machines had?

Anything more approachable than OpenGenera, which is a bit of a PITA?
