Ask HN: Recommendations for the best handwriting recognition software?

I want to read handwritten notes from students into a database to do some analysis. Are there any general purpose OCRs for handwriting which can get this done with good accuracy? Goes without saying that the handwritings may differ though all the notes are in English.
