After replacing the brake line I was worried I'd have to rebalance my brake as well - hence the research - but it turns out the wheel wasn't properly mounted. It's not covered in the link, but I assume you balance these calipers by adjusting the length of the noodle?
I'm surprised it works but it is a testimony to the high quality of modern manufacturing and design that you can transfer force "around corners" thru a wire inside a tube (likely made of a wire-plastic composite). A bicycle cable is a form of Bowden cable:
