I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on why FL seems not to have had much of an impact, either in use on its own or as a direct inspiration for later languages? (or if I'm missing things inspired by FL, what are they?) Is it the combination of a variable-free style with a dynamically typed system that made it challenging to work with?
I'm not a PLT guy, but from my little reading, I think it was too radical and too early. But it was fun reading him saying "Everything works with pure functions, well, except IO, we need to fix that." decades ago.
Backus-Naur form was a great help to me in the 70s and 80s. Thanks, John.
