Ask HN: Your strategy for Freelance Recession?

I'm 50 and have a home but no mortgage. I work for myself and my income is good, but up and down. I am facing a few quiet months. What is your financial strategy for knowing when it is time to become an employee again?

I imagine if I had no income for 3 months I would think again.
