Biggest national security concern to the US isn't Tiktok, but Apple.

Not just a source, but some fact based reasoning. Hyperbole perhaps? Need some context
Wow, downvoted for the common practice of pointing out dupes. Anyone able to chime in why? There was a recent HN discussion about reasons, I didn't catch dupe-ing in it.
Downvotes are cool here, actually.

/S

I had the same thing happen to me once.

Apparently, the acceptable way here is to say 'Related', instead of dupe.

btw. I've upvoted to remove the downvote. It's the only thing I use votes for.

Jay Newman calling it out in a systematic way even makes the headline forgivable.

Taiwan is an independent democratic country that is not part of China. And most advanced chips (the ones in top iphones and macs) are manufactured there.
good thing that the US and most other nations are actually recognizing that then /s
Unfortunately, the PRC is a lot bigger and might invade if the US recognized the obvious truth that Taiwan is an independent country.

They already throw tantrums over Taiwan for all kinds of silly reasons.

Then why not recognize Ukraine as part of Russia to avoid losing lives in Ukraine? Taiwanese lives > Freedom and Democracy > Ukraine lives?
Taiwan is the historic rightful government of China, subordinate only to the Mongolian Khanate (which also has suzerainty over Russia, conveniently). If we're talking about historic control that is, which certain hawks in the PRC and Russia seem inclined to do.

Long live the Khanate!

That's a bold title for an article that doesn't really follow through with their assertion. Apple is an American company that heavily exploits Chinese manufacturing, but has future plans to do far less so.

The headline is sensational, but the thesis of the article is strong. No company better executed the idea of globalization than Apple, but their pursuit of supply chain efficiency meant moving everything to China.

Hindsight is 20/20. China seemed to be on a path towards more openness and more human rights, not less, and so it is hard to fault Apple for seeing China as a logical partner, but Xi changed all that.

I can’t help but feel that the PRC is slowly undoing everything they have built over the last 30 years. Every company is scrambling to figure out how they can become less reliant on China because betting too big on China is too much of a risk.

It is the same with Russia. They seemed to be opening up and everyone was willing to give them a shot again and the first thing Putin does with that new trust is invade Ukraine.

People are also rethinking China because of Putin's invasion. While China currently seems more rational and competent than Russia under Putin, the invasion made major authoritarian leaders in general look worse by association.
Yes, the PRCs escalation of rhetoric surrounding Taiwan and actions to silence and shutdown internal critics such as Jack Ma have to be viewed now as steps towards further action.

We have to take China at their word that they will take Taiwan by force if required.

People are rethinking China because the US is closer than ever to being #2 economically and that's somehow unacceptable.
I think that is part of it, but make no mistake, China's rhetoric and actions have become more aggressive over the last decade.
> "Unwillingly, perhaps, Apple has become a facilitator of surveillance and government censorship."

Ah yes, completely an unwilling and innocent facilitator
