Sounds like what someone who thinks it's still possible to save enough money for college by stashing part of their allowance and working part-time jobs in high school would say.
The military will not only pay for college but also advanced degrees. Even payback prior school debt. End of the day I as a parent or a taxpayer don't owe anyone a college education. Nobody paid for mine and I turned out exceptional through get this....the work ethics I learned in the USMC. How about that!
Anyone that tells me they don't have the money for something, I always say "open the books." People are terrible at managing their money. I can't tell you how many high income earners are living pay check to pay check.
And there's a solution for folks who are drowning in debt, declare bankruptcy. But this is where student loans are insidious - you cannot bankrupt them. That's the one big change that folks should make wrt to the student debt crisis. Make the loan eligible for bankruptcy (like any other loan) and then keep demographic statistics on who defaulted on their students loans and use that to reduce credit to high risk majors/universities/etc.
