Ask HN: How’s the Job Search Going?

3 points by EddieEngineers ↗ HN
I’ve never seen the tech market like this. 9 years experience and getting rejected prior to any initial interviews for dozens of jobs - normally I get around 50% interviews and of those 50% job offers. Anyone else having similar issues?

Over 21 years I would say it's gone back and forth from "leave a job, take a day off, interview the next day for another job, start at the end of the week" to the occasional job search that takes most of a year.
Heh - times have been good for so long, we have a generation of coders that never saw bad times.

Tech has its ups and downs just like any other career...

Yeah I've never seen a bad time before so it's sort of freaking me out.

It's gone from 'oh, I want a new job, I'll start next week somewhere I guess' to 'oh, I got a rejection from twenty roles that match me perfectly, huh...'

Way to take my professional ego down a few pegs lol

Hopefully it'll turn around for ya soon..Don't forget "who's hiring" comes out this week :-D Also, with 10 years exp. you're getting into the higher end of the pay scales, so rather then taking your ego down, think of it as "I'm no longer a starving student..."

I quit my job (Friday was my last day), so I'm waiting for it as well. I figure I'll take it slow, and try to find something that's really interesting. I'm 55, and got my last job about 3 years ago - so it'll be interesting to see if I get any pushback about my age...

Thanks! If it helps I've worked with a couple technical people at my most recent startup role who were a similar age and never saw any ageism so there's definitely companies out there that respect serious experience :) Best of luck with your search too!
Thanks - Can't say I've really noticed it either...But it comes up on here often enough I'm curious.
