> More recently, OpenAI shit their pants and threatened to pull out of the EU if they regulate AI too strongly.

And what many people is missing: OpenAI will NOT pull out if they do not want to follow regulations. They will be kicked out. To break regulations and continue operating is not an option, it is not their choice.

OpenAI is another example of a company pushing for an untested technology into societies without any regard for their safety.

I still remember when ChatGPT was deemed too dangerous for general use... until some higher up though decided to ignore the experts concerns in the name of profit.

As engineers we have a duty towards society. We build technology that will improve the world. Otherwise we become just common criminals.

Remember that algorithm pushed stories at Facebook is considered instrumental for the Rohingya genocide. Facebook/Meta pushed for their garbage rage-inducing algorithm sorting of posts to increase profits totally ignoring the damage that they were doing. ChatGPT is just more powerful and will have a larger impact on society.

> Everybody is annoyed by the cookie pop-ups. But the regulation behind it, GDPR

A poor choice of opening words. GDPR is not responsible for the cookie popups, it's the ePrivacy directive.
