iPhone 14: there is no free lunch

I went for a lunch to bistro with self-catering, where I grabbed a soup, smashed potato and then tried to pay for that by my new iPhone 14. However, iPay didn't work for some reason. Manager didn't agree that I pay later and I left hungry. I was glad that security didn't throw me out. iPay didn't work because my card is got expired today. I'd really would like to get warning about that ahead or at least today, but instead iPhone decided to remind me that there is no free lunch.

Most (maybe all?) of my cards in Apple Pay will automatically update when they expire, provided you've activated the physical version too. Which credit card company was it?

That's correct. They also get automatically updated in Google Pay. I think this is your bank's fault.
