Ask HN: Who Lives in the Las Vegas Area?

I'm likely moving to the Las Vegas area next year, and I'm wondering if anyone here has any opinions they'd like to shared. My bias is negative, so I'm hoping to be swayed the other way, but I guess we'll see.

What do you do for fun? Do you have a sense of community? What do you do during the Summer to survive the heat and not get stuck inside for the entire season? Are there enough trees/parks for a healthy life? Anything else you want to mention?

Having been here 10+ years, it feels like it's growing to me. With new sports teams that are already here and new ones arriving, there's more than just casinos for entertainment. There are also other companies coming here, moving from CA and other places. There are about 3 months of the year where it's so hot that it's uncomfortable to stay outside for an extended period of time - though the rest of the year is fine, with mild Winters. Not sure what your occupation is, but I'm a software engineer and have found work both local and remote.

I appreciate your response. What do you end up doing during the summer? Do you adjust your schedule to be out more when the Sun is down or do you just spend almost all of your time indoors?

Also any insight on the new water restrictions? I’m curious if Las Vegas will become like Phoenix and restrict new development.

If I need to be outdoors, I schedule it earlier in the day. If we do go out to a farmers market or something similar, we don't spend a lot of time outside. We also schedule walks for when the sun is going down and take water with us.

Arizona, California, and Nevada recently reached a new deal on Colorado River water sharing and there are a few interesting discussions on HN about that. Right now, we have watering schedules of 2 or 3 days a week to keep our plants from dying and these days a lot of HOAs require approval (which is unlikely) if you want to plant grass in your yard (landscape plans require approval). Last week, the Governor signed a new bill that gave Nevada the power to restrict residential water usage if we get into a crisis.
