Is it normal to use snapshots to fix mistakes?

I've never actually fixed my computer. I just use snapshots whenever I think I'm about to break something so if something does break I just roll back to before I made my mistake and try again. Disk space is basically free these days so it is feasible to store a lot of snapshots of my computer. How did people live before we had huge cheap disks that enable us to basically use time travel to fix all of our mistakes?

We separated the disk the operating system is on from the disk all of our data and other things are on, and then we formatted our OS drive and reinstalled it from scratch.

Some fixes were done manually involving searching error codes on another computer or a library computer or through walkthroughs found on various forums. Sometimes virus removal was done manually via regedit, and you were never really sure if you fully removed the virus.
