Can AI common sense be faked via brute force?

A very common criticism of current AI is that it lacks common sense. But I see each new incarnation being able to "fake it" ever better. I'm impressed by ChatGPT's ability to reason like a stoned human. Maybe it can get "good enough" common sense without actually having it, simply by digesting and processing enough content: the brute-force strategy. Moore's law and/or AI-dedicated hardware perhaps can take us there. I definitely feel it may soon out-compete newbies and the low rung of human staff (and perhaps someday outdo smarties also).
