It's an annoyingly imprecise term, since those of us who grew up with, say, the Commodore 64 have a different understanding of a jiffy (~1/60s, as maintained in TI/TI$ from the Timer A interrupt at $ea31).

I'm sorry, I'm possibly dense but... did something notable change about the scheduling-clock recently? I have vague memories of poking at jiffies in the kernel >20 years ago mucking around with low latency audio...
