Consulting for 4mo. considering doing something else

I was laid off from my TPM gig about four months ago. Transitioning from core dev to a technical product role seemed like a good idea to broaden my future options and explore an area of tech I was curious about. At the time I had around 4yrs of SWE experience, mixture of FAANG and two startups.

Market conditions in January had a serious impact on the startup I was working for as a TPM and unfortunately my role was liquidated.

In the meantime I've been consulting for a friend's YC company in a technical role and that's been great but it's just not quite fulfilling my goals financially. I have equity and can cover my monthly expenses but it feels like I'm falling backwards.

I've also come to realize that having "TPM" on my resume or something about my resume (no gaps, just a few startup stints about 1.8yrs long) has proved to be a death knell to my job prospects?

Either the market is totally screwed or I've somehow marked myself as a problematic employee?

My mentor suggested moving forward with strong cover letters and branding myself as a "product minded engineer" however I'm really starting to worry about job security.

Should I just consider doing something else entirely? Tech sales etc? I feel like I've wasted 4yrs of my life getting a CS degree and pissed away what could've been a fruitful career if I'd just taken the boring path and stayed at Amazon all this time.

Any advice is appreciated, feeling pretty down at the moment.
