I can't speak much for the subject other than to say the article suggests exclusives have been one of their biggest draws and despite being a daily user of Spotify for music I have no idea what they are or if I'm missing out.

I swapped to Google Podcasts a while ago and much prefer the UI and features.

I imagine there's even better apps out there though as Google Podcasts is also pretty limited.

Seconded. It adds all the functionality that a player SHOULD have e.g. intelligent silence skipping, playback speed, custom start skips, etc.

Not letting you skip more than 15 seconds at a time should be an indication of how off their strategy is.

It's just a terrible podcast player, but I do use it because Apple Podcasts is almost worse and doesn't work on my car.
