Ask HN: Any advice on how to deal with AT&T's eSIM/EUICC Lock?
I bought 24 refurbished 9th gen iPads for my business and 7 of them are limited to using AT&T for eSIM (note: they will work for regular SIM cards but will only allow AT&T for eSIM). AT&T is the ONLY cellular company in the US that uses this disgusting anti-competitive practice. I talked with my Apple Business Manager rep and they confirmed in their system that the eSIM Lock (Also known as EUICC Lock) is on AT&T's side and only AT&T can unlock the device.
I have spent 4+ hours on the phone and 1-2 hours on chat/DM (AT&T forums and Reddit) with AT&T and sometimes they tell me there is nothing they can do and sometimes they tell me they are putting in a request but in the end these 7 iPads are worthless to me until AT&T unlocks them. Their reps are HIGHLY inconsistent and some even tell me "those iPads are not in our system" which is wrong as Apple has confirmed that the lock is on AT&T's side.
Other terms AT&T sometimes uses instead of "unlocking": "carrier visibility" or "carrier reveal".
I'm at my wits end here trying to get these to work. I just filed something with the FCC and with my state's Attorney General but I was wondering if HN has any more suggestions.
Thank you.
