I know for a fact this is true. But, you can go to voip.ms and for 50c a month have all the burner numbers you want and hold them indefinitely. One thing he didn’t mention is that most numbers today are cellular devices constantly broadcasting your location. It’s a voluntary ankle bracelet
A lot of places just wont let you use a voip number, but if you port in a number to a voip service this often works and lets you maintain the number for pretty cheap. It is a big hassle, though, if you are trying to cycle numbers regularly.
For grocery stores and other things that aren't going to try to use it for 2fa I just use arbitrary numbers of other local businesses. Sometimes it's even already registered!
voip.ms has a massive DID bank to choose from and receives SMS. they can’t tell it’s voip can’t tell the difference for the majority of the numbers. I also use a great voip app called groundwire
About 10-12 years ago I crashed/hung a Home Depot POS using Jenny's number. That's when I started using numbers from other businesses instead (actually I started by using the number of the business I was at, but I noticed some places filter on this).
