Do Popular Social Apps For Twitter/Facebook Use Encryption

I've always been curious, do popular mobile apps such as Facebook or Twitter use SSL encryption for their data? Especially considering that Facebook doesn't force SSL on their site.

Has anyone tested this or got an answer?
