On the one hand...yes, school systems very often treat teachers like crap. Ditto for modern America and mothers.
OTOH...at least in my family lore, trying to time childbirth for the "slow season" - between the Xmas holiday and beginnings of spring planting - was an obvious and normal strategy for farm housewives 150+ years ago.
My point was that common-sense women, in situations where there was no Evil Employer, still tried to arrange things so that they gave birth during the months when they had the least other work to do.
