Sad? Not in the slightest. Twitter is easily replaced. It benefitted from the network effect: regardless of its technical merits, it was the place where people already were, and therefore the place to be. Its only "moat" was that there was no other single place to go, rather than something fundamental to the technology.
If it disappears, another will quickly form. The only sad thing is that I, personally, would just as soon there not be any place at all for vapid hot takes that for some reason get treated as news.
