Back when components were expensive! Now they all cost pennies, and I wish they would do exactly the opposite of this a lot of the time...
Probably still relevant with mechanical stuff though... everything always seems to have a few more screws than is really needed, and 5 extra plastic injection molded bits that really shouldn't be there....
