I went searching for this novel, and found it here:

It sounds like it was inspired by the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series of books[1] from the '70s and '80s, but digital. I've wondered why this style of storytelling is not more popular, especially since a digital format should make it easier to compose and allow more flexibility with the decision tree.

Visual Novels are effectively this and seem to be fairly mainstream.
