I really appreciate making a conscious choice to buy t-shirts that are supporting some initiative, group, project or athlete that you care of, and try to do it myself. T-shirts are something that is used in unformal settigns (at least for me), and often the quality is as good or better than the ones you buy in normal clothing stores. It is also nice to buy something once vs having some kind of membership as it just feels to comitting rather than make the choice to support something with a one time purchase. Just recently I tried (unsuccessfully) to find merch like this for a couple of python projects I appreciate a lot.
Sadly I find that if often has been put too little thinking into the design of the t-shirts (or other merch) - where the logos become to big and visible and often with a big slogan or message printed. I want to support by purchasing the t-shirt, not by becoming a walking billboard for the project (I am not THAT attached to it that I want the project to be the first thing people notice when they see me).
For this project it seems like you can customize it somewhat yourself. By shrinking the logo to 2.5x1.95in from 9x6.8in and placing it on the left side over the chest area it becomes a lot more passable for me. If there was a fully black logo and a choice for al ogo with and without the url, it would be even better for my taste. https://openbenches.myspreadshop.co.uk/create?product=07ca0c...
This is just my personal opinion, and maybe the majority want to have a big logo or slogan on the merch they buy (certainly those who are very invested in the project would), but at least for me it feels like a wrong choice to focus on the merch as a marketing opportunity if the real value is selling as much merch as possible.
I have never bought something from one of those generic merch sites, but I guess some people do, otherwise they wouldn't exist.
Good for them if they can offset some of their costs with that.
