At that point it was true. Facebook's targeting at that point was just based on self-selected interests. It would naturally develop over time into this super-elaborate retargeting and tracking behemoth.
In terms of privacy, my girlfriend and I were no longer using Facebook messenger when twice it happened that someone talked while we are on the call as if the person was on duty to monitor conversation, he even talked and we heard clearly for about 10 seconds before it stopped, it was not Asian so it is not something our much captured. It happened again the next night, but this time it is a woman. After that, we decided we wouldn't use it. It happened in 2020 or 2021.
You sure you didn't just have a video playing in the background?
I find this likely too. Messenger used to have a feature that let you watch videos together over the call. Totally could see one of them hitting an in-video video thumbnail and not realize it was happening.

Something newer happen since this?

What was reason for post?

Something new has indeed happened since the last 20 years.

From a company that used to deny this kind of allegations to being one of the largest violators of online privacy of billions of people, all in the span of just 20 years. I find it very interesting to see how companies change over time, and this is an interesting reminder of what facebook was and has now become.

> 20 years

Facebook isn’t even that old. This article is from 12 years ago.

Facebook soft launched in 2004, and launched in 2006. By common standards in rounding... It's 20 yrs old.
