Ask HN: First Steps as a new grad SWE in Europe?

Hey HN people,

Long-time lurker here, just about to finish my Software Engineering degree and get started on an internship. I've picked up a ton from the threads and comments here over the years – all the tech wisdom and life lessons. Now, on the edge of launching my professional life, it got me thinking: What nuggets of advice would you have given your fresh-out-of-college self?

Also, a lot of the career tips here are pretty US and Bay Area-focused, which totally makes sense. But for those who've made their mark in Europe (thinking France, Germany, UK), what's your take? I'm super curious about the less-talked-about paths: working in medium-sized companies, German Mittelstands, EU multinationals or those niche specialist firms that aren't household names but play big roles behind the scenes.

What were some of your surprise challenges, and how did you tackle them? Any heads-ups for a newbie like me to prepare for these potential hurdles?
