Will commercializing few services on top of Open Source tools work?

Now a days a lot of open source tools are building managed services on top of their open source codebase. They provide the self hosted version for free and also a manager version with a paid plan. Does this kind of open core models next big thing in software market?

It's really hard to build on top of something that you don't know how it's build.

With Code, a lot of things crumble and break while adding on top of something so beware.
