"Worldcoin’s website outlines its key potential applications: fortifying incentive strategies like coupons and loyalty programs traditionally susceptible to fraud, combating bots through identity confirmation and facilitating a globally democratic governance mechanism."
a completely idiotic business theme/plan more appropriate for 2003 than 2023. just a profoundly stupid idea.
incidentally, if this does become a ticket to participating in global democracy, I presume we judge those without eyes as less than human.
How about this as a restatement/summarization of the plan --- collect people's biometric data and then sell identity verification as a service?
Personally, I think iris scans are a poor choice --- too awkward. Hand/palm scans would be better, easier, more natural --- like what Amazon is starting to do at Whole Foods.
Why would Sam Altman, the king of the world, ruin his reputation with crypto-bullshit at this time in his life? I honestly don't get it. Is it possible that he really thinks he's solving a problem?
Is it possible that he really thinks he's solving a problem?
Yes. The problem he is solving is identity verification. KYC for the web.
The "crypto-bullshit" is how you convince people to participate. Never underestimate the stupidity of the lower 40% of the population.
The question in my mind is --- will 40% of the population be enough to get the ball rolling? Will it be viable if 60% of the population still can't be verified?
I feel like a few years ago, you could use crypto as a hook. Now, it's poison to most people. There must be a way to pull off KYC for the web without tainting it with crypto.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not dumping on the technology of crypto. I'm dumping on the actual result and the culture surrounding it. It's like Communism... it's great until you get people involved.

Yes. But I doubt you can do it for less ... but feel free to try.
The ultimate identifier is DNA ... but it's impractical for casual, everyday use.
But you have to admire companies like 23andMe who actually convince people to pay for the privilege of surrendering their identity and signing away all rights to this ultimate definition of themselves --- which is then sold to others --- like law enforcement.
When their kids can't get a job or insurance because of what their DNA has revealed, these people can only blame their own stupidity --- quite possibly indictive of a genetic weakness in itself.

Reluctant to surrender your privacy? Here, have some coins we just minted. Feel all better now?

Wonder what Amazon's business plan is?
