Show HN: HumHire, a marketplace for AI-free creativity (humhire.com)
My name is Billy Gardner McIntyre. I’m a developer and writer, and for the last eight years, I’ve earned my living as a freelance writer on Fiverr, where I’m “Top Rated” and “Pro verified” and where I’ve worked with thousands of entrepreneurs and businesses owners from around the world. There are some articles out there about me if you’d like to read more about the small business I’ve built on Fiverr.
Today, I’m announcing that I’ve built my own platform for freelancers – focusing on enabling creative professionals to provide evidence (in the form of videos, streams, and more methods to come) that they’ve done something without generative AI. These methods will also be available outside the context of the marketplace - for bloggers, schools, working creatives, and anyone else who wants to use them.
My platform is called HumHire – like “human hire,” get it? I got the idea for it about a year and a half ago and started to record myself writing, because I was playing around with the GPT-3 API in command line and I could see that it was improving quickly. I started building HumHire this spring and really picked up the pace about a month ago, when some of my peers started to reach out to me to ask how my business was faring.
The thing is, I’m still making a comfortable living on Fiverr as of today. Revenue has gone down, but not to zero like my copywriter friends’ revenue has. Because I specialize in ghostwriting people’s memoirs, which are too long for the ChatGPT token slot and very interview-intensive, I suspect that would be true for at least a little while longer.
But I’ve decided not to wait. I know that a lot of people will think this is pointless – or that I’m a luddite or something. I’ve heard as much from many friends I’ve told about this, and it’s all good! It’s important to me, though, and with the WGA/SAG strikes and everything, I suspect HumHire could turn out to be important to a lot of other people too.
Like I said, it’s still in very early stages, but I didn’t want to put off the launch any longer. I’ll be manually reviewing and approving all other creators for the next 30 days, just to take things slow and ensure the integrity of the platform, but if you have any feedback now, I would love to hear it.
Thank you very much,
Billy
