I think it depends on what you want from the platform. I like the real world contacts this platform can generate.

On the other hand, I must avoid touching hot button topics because some of them, no matter what stance you do take, essentially ruin your ability to interact with large swaths of the population or with employers.

That's super reasonable. And yes, the expectations and intent usually decide one's approach with this decision.
