The creek looks human dug to begin with, so probably just stopped the flow at the upstream reservoir.

More remodel railroad than practical, but I guess why not ?

But seriously there are ways to extract a bit more power from this with less complications and a simpler design. But, this does make a nice video, which I am sure is the real reason for this project.
