My personal take is that occupy flew too close to the sun, and the ultra-rich worked together to completely saturate public discourse with identity politics issues so that no organized group of people ever thinks of taking the fight directly to the rich again.
Mine is Obama got elected and it led to a massive backlash by those who previously kept their opinions to themselves, believing they were the silent majority. They realized they weren't the majority and so no longer stayed quiet.
problem is nobody blowin the whistle on that and it'd involve a lot of hands. Might be more like occupy made companies aware of an untapped market and they saturated it with virtue signaling trying to get that youth money instead. maybe bit of both. I just know I ain't heard anyone saying they got proof for the conspiracy part and the "companies virtue signaling" thing is a time honored tradition
Xi Jinping took control of the CCP as chairman in 2012, Putin won an election in 2012 as well as Obama. 2013 were snowden leaks.
A lot of election year and sore-loser nastiness was happening around then including the birther movement that shot trump into the arena.
I suspect Russia and China were sowing strife and discontent in favor of romney even back then.
Occupy wallstreet died a miserable death late 2011. The people of the world that got screwed over in 2008's crash realized that they have no power over the ruling class, the changing world require adapting which is painful.
In the future, I suspect 2020's COVID crisis will snowball into an eventful election year in 2024-25. Hottest summer, future possible pres is on multiple criminal trials, putin is desperate to stop US support for ukraine and Xi knows the timing couldn't be more perfect to attack taiwan on a US election year right at the peak of Ukraine spending. Taiwan involvement would be at it's costliest for the US.
I am mentioning geopolitics because all these social issues in the US, my theory is in some way or another, US's enemies fuel and amplify them covertly, not only because it is the cheapest and most effectice means but it is also the most reliable and proven way to defeat the US.
Vietnam was a cold war conflict, and the US lost because of domestic popular support was lost for the war and for escalting it into a conflict with China. You'll note this was right around 68-71. And the hippie movement and anti-war protests had plenty of communist connections as well as CIA infiltration (everyone was trying to exploit the masses with propaganda and disinformation).
