There was a book that people in the comments seem to overwhelmingly recommend but I can no longer find.

The bits I remember were it was written in 2017, possibly O'Reilly, maybe 375 pages long

I don't think it was this, but this looks interesting

I think anyone who starts with data as their career should begin with this book
