Ask HN: Will Tesla have a Chat GPT moment?

3 points by HellDunkel ↗ HN
Musk claims Tesla will have a ChatGPT moment where, all of a sudden, all Teslas will become potential robotaxis. He has been saying this for a while but until now failed to deliver.

True autonomy turned out to be a challenge, harder than imagined by a lot of people, including Musk. On the other hand Tesla has kept its focus and continued to improve the system.

I think the chance of AI making a ChatGPT like leap to super humane driving capability is likely and may only be a few years away. I used to think otherwise and argue that a million cornercases would pose a significant hurdle to autonomous driving but the way ChatGPT could be trained to correspond and translate language changed my view. What is your take?

Musk is a charlatan. Tesla will end up in the dustbin of automotive history alongside Saturn.

I don’t like Musk either. But I drive a Tesla and, while I think he’s forever talking up hard stuff where the timeline always turns out longer than his prediction - well, he would say that wouldn’t he? Needs to keep people buying shares - albeit balancing that against losing credibility. Curiously, he doesn’t seem (publicly at least) too concerned about that. Aligning Tesla with Saturn sounds like hyperbole to me - I have no feelings either way about being proved wrong in future. I enjoy the product for what it is now, not for promises of future capability.
