Money is fairly tight, what is essential kit for someone starting their undergrad life?

(UK, Mech Eng if it matters; a friend not me, I'm old as the hills; term starts in about 1 months time)

Maybe not essential but it'll come in handy: a laser printer. The world isn't quite as paperless yet as some young folks think.
