Ask HN: Is WhatsApp leaking group metadata?

Recently my friends have been reporting Chinese trader-type scam messages where the sender knew their first name and one of their friend's first names, and they're only really connected through a WhatsApp group. It seems to have happened to different friends with different common groups. Is this a known problem?
