I experienced the issue in France. Seems that the playground is 100% uptime on past 90 days. Will use that while waiting.
Doesn't that cost extra compared to Plus?
I really despise this trend of companies not acknowledging their product or service is down, but instead simply say their service is 'degraded'. On top of that, they will use language like 'some users'.

Be open about it: your service is stone cold down and no one can use it. Cut out the stupid business speak.

They also refuse to switch their status page to be down, presumably because of SLA related measurements which has prompted some manager to decide that unless he approves of it personally, the status page cannot be touched.
Huhu. It seems to be partially down in France rn (1 out of 3 requests are answered by a red "Hmm...something seems to have gone wrong.").

> Q: Hello, some users find it strange that your engineers say "performance is degraded" when the servers powering you are inaccessible. They believe it would be better to state "the service is temporarily down", but they think an engineer from your side insists on maintaining high uptime. What do you think?

> A: I have information up until September 2021, and at that time, specific details about OpenAI's current communication strategy might not be included in my database. Communication strategies of a company can evolve over time based on needs, user feedback, and changing circumstances. However, as of my last update, OpenAI tended to emphasize transparency, accountability, and open communication with users.

It's not down, it's resting. It's pining for the fjords!
Couldn't agree more. OpenAI can afford such messaging. But it's more nuanced when a company is public.
Can it? I mean they got an enterprise product out...
SLAs is what enterprises care about. But how you frame it in public communications affects share price.

Technically if you are a user but you weren't using it when it was down then it wasn't down for you - hence degraded for some users. Also, it was coming up and down - hence degraded
> Technically if you are a user but you weren't using it when it was down then it wasn't down for you

By the same logic, if someone stole money from you but you haven't noticed it, you haven't been robbed.

Hey, it's not down unless it's down for everyone. There is this one guy it is still working for, so it is "degraded" not down.
I love the comment of "Degraded Performance"

Only the site loads. Any request made to ChatGPT fails, using their APIs fails with 502 or just no response for 5+ minutes.

So the whole service is down...

The API didn't go down. We run a production service and had no issues
It's down for me on my main site (gpt-4-0613). Are you using the Azure service or OpenAI?
> I love the comment of "Degraded Performance"

FWIW, they have an additional graph on the main page

https://status.openai.com/

And in that graph they mark the current status of ChatGPT as “Major Outage”

I am more upset that the API is down than ChatGPT itself, which the API still shows green to this moment, but I am still timing out after 5 minutes.
Is this the new "Google is down"? In terms of impact on desk worker productivity?
More like StackOverflow I suppose.

as an aside, bard hasn't gone down
Why would it? It's not worth using.
It can understand image somewhat, and for free so that's nice
Thanks, going to try it out for the first time
In my (limited) experience with Bard it is not at all comparable to GPT4. I'd say it's a little worse than GPT3.5 even.

Is there an SLA for plus users? Twice in 3 days is kind of ridiculous, and would make me think twice before buying an enterprise version
Just use the playground when it goes down. You are paying $20/mo and they are scaling like crazy, let's not be ridiculous
Then it wouldn't be a big deal to ask for part of that $20 back when the service is unavailable.
For a downtime of 2 hours they would owe you around 0.05$ (20x2/(24x31)). Perhaps they can give you a 1000 token GPT4 budget?
It didn't even exist one year ago. We will survive.
But what about all the crypto bros who just pivoted?
What's it like walking through life this snarky/hating everything/everybody by default?

Why do you have to categorize people into "blocks"/groups in a derogatory fashion?

Lots of stuff didn't exist 2000 years ago.

We still survived.

Indeed. And if all AI tools went down permanently now, we'd actually be a lot better off.
I wonder if ChatGPT is overloaded due to the influx of students returning to school.
That plus they seem to have added additional security checks (probably doing multiple LLM calls, like additional validation calls) since about that enterprise announcement. I noticed certain things being a lot slower since a few days ago.
Maybe the AGI canary should be OpenAI having a stable service?

It's gotten a lot better but they previously were returning 429 rate limit exceeded even when you weren't, I assume at very busy times - the headers of the response showed we were nowhere near the rate limit.

Actually quite frustrating doing that as we thought we had some errors in our system before we digged into it deeper. Would have been much better to return 500.

Oh no, what will all of the lazy babies do now to be dazzled by nonsense?
chatGPT is an amazing tool. It has really increased the speed of my coding. Why do you hate it?
Now it's an amazing tool, but one day it will be amazing at taking your job completely.
I hope for that outcome… in the meantime, back to my boring day job. I’d rather be surfing
Anyone else find it funny that this is now #35 on HN, despite having more comments and votes than posts of similar age that are at #12, #8 and #3?
