I was curious to hear if anyone knowledgeable at HN has thoughts on Gnu Taler[1].

Until you asked the question, I had never heard of Taler. I'd like to think of myself as being relatively up to date with the what's going on in in our tech world.

So, having made that confession, I doubt whether the network effects will render Taler vaiable in anything but the most niche situations.

It's quite interesting, but never seems to get anywhere. There has been some talk about a European central bank talking with the developers years ago, but I haven't heard anything since.

I also think that the GNU association keeps this project back, because it makes it look like foremost a software project. I think a more "political" stance with the software development attached would help it a bit.

Still, it's a very hard field to get into. Money systems don't get introduced and used on a whim.

What does it take to run an exchange?
