Tell HN: uBlock Origin Blocks YouTube

for several days now I couldnt load youtube. incognito works though. so I thought it has to do something with my extensions. turns out ublock origin (when enabled) causes youtube to only show a skeleton page (no content).

The reddit you linked to said to force update your filter lists and things will be back to normal.

Have you done this?

Meanwhile, for a less "ad-full" youtube experience, try yt-dlp: https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp

yes Ive done it and it worked.

I noticed youtube will detect too many downloads and start serving errors at some point. I could download one or sometimes two videos error free and then yt-dlp log starts spamming with 'unreachable' errors...

I've not experienced that one (yet) myself.

If you are running an older version and there has been an update, try updating to the newer version and see if that helps.

yt-dlp is awesome, but I'd hardly call it an "experience" that's alternative to the YouTube GUI. That's like telling someone who's frustrated with Chrome to just use curl.

The emphasis should be on "less 'ad-full'" -- that is the "experience" it provides, a significant reduction in advertising.
